What Happens If It Rains on Your Wedding Day?

If you see rain on the forecast on your wedding day, it’s only normal to get a little worried. Yet, rest assured, some of the most beautiful weddings occur on rainy days and there are plenty of ways to make the rain work for you. Plus, it’s actually considered good luck for it to rain on your wedding day.

7 Things You Can Do to Ensure the Perfect Day Even If It Rains on Your Wedding Day

#1. Confirm That Your Venue Has a Backup Plan

While there are always ways to make a rainy-day wedding work, the goal is to find a wedding venue that has a backup plan already in place to help take the stress off of you. It’s important to talk to your venue ahead of time to see what their plan is.

If you are planning an outdoor ceremony and an indoor reception, the venue should be able to quickly transform the indoor space from the ceremony site to the reception space so that it looks completely different, all while guests enjoy cocktail hour in another covered or indoor area of the venue.

We recommend asking your venue about their rainy-day plan before you ever book the venue, even if rain may not be on the forecast. This is especially important if you have an outdoor ceremony or reception planned.

At Lighthouse Point Yacht Club, we guarantee a beautiful wedding day – rain or shine. We have a beautiful indoor space with stunning views that can accommodate wedding guests if the weather doesn’t permit an outdoor ceremony.

#2. Get a Tent

A tent is a beautiful option if Mother Nature decides to rain on your special day. Clear-roof tents are especially spectacular, providing guests with plenty of coverage while still making you feel like you’re outside.  Plus, a tent offers a way to string lighting and hang chandeliers, bringing beautiful elements to your wedding.

If the rain decides to hold off, you can always keep the tent sides open, letting in a nice cool breeze from outside. Or, if the rain starts coming down heavy, the tent sides can be closed to keep guests nice and dry.

#3. Move Your Ceremony or Reception Indoors

If your venue allows, you can move your ceremony and/or reception inside to keep you and your guests dry. Your venue may also offer a covered outdoor space to host cocktail hour or other elements of your wedding.

#4. Talk to Your Photographer

Outdoor photos may be something you are looking forward to, but just because it’s raining doesn’t mean you can’t score some great pictures. Clear umbrellas offer a beautiful touch to wedding photos. Plus, the right photographer will know how to play with the light and puddles to create epic photographs.

Before selecting a wedding photographer, ask to see an album from a rainy-day wedding. This will help ease your mind about their ability to take good pictures no matter what the weather blows your way.

#5. Offer Guests Blankets & Umbrellas

Worried about your guests getting wet or becoming cold due to the weather? Set out buckets filled with blankets and umbrellas that coordinate with your wedding colors. You could even use these as take-home gifts. Touches like this are much appreciated and do not go unnoticed.

#6. Rain-friendly Wedding Décor

Have some wedding décor made that matches the rainy-day theme. For instance, you could have bridesmaids wear monogram rain boots or gift them monogram umbrellas along with their pretty robes. Or you could invest in a cute cake toper that features an umbrella over the bride and groom. Ideas like this will help make light of the rain, and maybe even make it seem like you were planning for it to be there all along!

#7. Embrace the Rain

If it does rain on your wedding day, the best thing you can do is embrace it and enjoy the good luck that supposedly comes with the showers. While you can create a backup plan for just about anything that might happen on your wedding day, always expect the unexpected. Be prepared to roll with the punches and realize that no matter what the weather does, your wedding day will be the most special day of your life.
