This South Florida organization is part of a national network of Honor Flight Hubs, where our mission is to transport America’s veterans to Washington, D.C. to visit those memorials dedicated to honor their service and sacrifices. Our goal is to reach every single veteran in America, willing and able of getting on a plane and a bus, to visit their memorial.
Top priority is given to America’s most senior heroes — survivors of World War II and any veteran with a terminal illness who wishes to visit THEIR memorial. The program will naturally transition to Korean War, Vietnam War and all other veterans who served, on a chronological basis.
Since America felt it was important to build a memorial to the service and the ultimate sacrifice of her veterans, Honor Flight South Florida believes it’s equally important that they actually get to visit and experience their memorial. Our Motto: “We can’t all be heroes. Some of us have to stand on the curb and clap as they go by.
The day is long for our Heroes and ALL Volunteer Staff, starting around 4am and ending at 9pm. Along the way, the Veterans are moved to tears for the gratitude so many show to them. In almost 100% of cases, the Veteran returns home from their day ranking it as one of the best days of their lives, just behind marrying their spouse or the birth of their children. These Heroes shy away from the thanks they are given from us as civilians and give the credit to their fellow service men and women, as most of these Veterans do… But they need to hear it …
Think about being there for the next homecoming (as you are seeing in these videos) … which is as emotional as any moment throughout the day. Our WWII Veterans helped save the world from tyranny and stop the slaughter of so many. For our Korean and Vietnam Veterans, there was no community homecoming…and for many, it was a difficult time on return. The Honor flight experience helps to heal these wounds and finally give our heroes the Welcome Home they have deserved for so long.
