5 Of The Best Traditional Summer Camp Activities

summer camp activitiesThere is nothing like the memories made at summer camp. Many of the kids and camp counselors you meet, as well as the activities you participate in, stay with you for a lifetime of good moments to think back on.  Kids that have never been to camp often want to know what traditional summer camp activities include, or rather what can they expect to be doing all day at camp? All camps offer their own special events, but there are certain staple activities that generate thoughts of carefree days at camp. Here are 6 of the best traditional summer camp activities kids of all ages enjoy year after year.

If you have been to camp many times before, these activities may serve as a reminder of all of the fun you had. If it is your first time going off to camp, allow these best traditional camp activities get you excited for some serious fun!

1. Nature Walks

Nature WalksI have such fond memories exploring nature in all new ways with my camp buddies. Nature walks provide a chance to see, learn, and experience things out in the wilderness you might otherwise not have the opportunity for. Kids love being out amongst the trees and animals, where stuffy air and ‘indoor’ rules don’t apply.

Exposing your children to nature may be a top priority, but how can you guarantee safety if you are not an experienced hiker yourself? This is where camp leaders with hiking experience really come in handy. Not only do they help keep your child safe from potential dangers, but also they are able to explain things about the wilderness that might otherwise go unnoticed. This gives kids the chance to learn so much!

Plus, at Camp Live Oak we work with the Leave No Trace Organization, meaning kids don’t just learn about the incredible moss trees, coffee plants, and animals hiding up in the tall trees, but they also learn how to keep our planet beautiful for future generations.

2. Non-Competitive Team Sports

spring-campMost kids enjoy sports, but at school and out on the little league field competition can really heat up, causing sports to lose some of their fun. That’s because when sports get overly competitive they can create issues for kids, both emotionally and physically. At camp we prefer games that bring out more fun than competition. When the focus isn’t on winning but instead on working together everyone feels accomplished, and a part of the team. Some kids don’t even enjoy sports elsewhere but love traditional non-competitive field sports played at camp. Camp field sports include kickball, flag tag, soccer and more.

3. Arts and Crafts

arts-craftsThere a comes a time when your feet start to feel tired from so many nature walks and sporting events, and so sitting back to enjoy some good creative fun is exactly what you crave. Creating something unique alongside your camp friends is fun on its own, but the icing on the cake is that you have a keepsake to show off for years to come.

Camps all over the world incorporate a diverse range of arts and crafts projects, including painting, sculpting, tie-dye, and more. Thanks to the guidance of experienced artists, arts and crafts at camp tend to be different from the typical projects you may complete at school. Kids learn new skills and have incredible pieces of artwork to bring home.

As kids enjoy the sights and smells, they also enjoy the company of one another. Since kids generally spend dinnertime inside around a traditional table, this offers a whole new experience to cherish forever.

5. Canoeing
